What is IMAP Email?

Many Headstand Media customers have been migrating their email services to Google’s Gmail or Google Apps for Business services at our recommendation. One big reason for this is that these services include IMAP email services. Many people are familiar with POP3 style email accounts, but are not yet familiar with this newer and more powerful protocol. Perhaps you wonder what IMAP would mean for you.

This morning I noticed a good explanation of IMAP on the Apple website located here: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/news/2008/11/what-is-imap-and-why-do-we-use-it.html. Like Google Apps and Google Gmail, Apple’s MobileMe service is also based upon IMAP.

I switched to IMAP over a year ago and have been happy I did ever since. Headstand Media switched our own business email services to Google Apps for Business a number of months ago. I recommend this option to anyone serious about maintaining the best, most efficient email communication tools available today.

One Response to “What is IMAP Email?”

  1. IMAP is wonderful! I’ve been using it for over a year too, and when you have as many Macs as I have, having my e-mail synchronized on the MacMini (iPhoto libraries and massive iTunes library), MacBook Pro (primary project machine) and MacBook Air (daily use and travel) and now iPhone – it is so helpful to have whatever I do on one instantly reflected on all the others, including folders, sent, and read/unread. (and MobileMe does the same with all contacts, calendar, and with Synced iDisk, all my files too!)

IMAP is the way to go!
