McKinsey Global Survey on Web 2.0

McKinsey Quarterly Global Survey on Web 2.0The McKinsey Quarterly recently published an article on how companies are benefiting from Web 2.0. Over the past three years, they followed rising Web 2.0 technologies and their uses, and conducted a survey of about 1,700 executives from businesses all over the world. This survey asked for specific responses as to the value added in three main areas:

  • Internally
  • Externally, with customers
  • In dealing with suppliers, partners, and outside experts

Here at Headstand Media, we’ve observed that the kinds of interactivity, communication, technology, strategy, and efficiency that come as a reward for adopting a Web 2.0 mindset are unlike any other. As we’ve developed web strategies and undertaken creative projects with our clients, we’ve seen just how exciting the Web 2.0 world really is.

One particularly interesting note from the “How companies are using Web 2.0″ section of the article discusses many of our favorite methods of “spreading knowledge”:

Web 2.0 delivers benefits by multiplying the opportunities for collaboration and by allowing knowledge to spread more effectively. These benefits can accrue through companies’ use of automatic information feeds such as RSS or microblogs, of which Twitter is the most popular manifestation. Although many companies use a mix of tools, the survey shows that among all respondents deriving benefits, the more heavily used technologies are blogs, wikis, and podcasts—the same tools that are popular among consumers—(Exhibit 2).
